After over three (3) decades of growth and expansion, today we are a globally integrated aluminium producer with the largest presence in Southeast Asia. Our products serve many industries throughout the world, including infrastructure, transportation, construction and consumer sectors.

1986

Press Metal was incorporated as a privately-owned aluminium extrusion company in Malaysia.

1993
  • Listed on the Second Board of Bursa Malaysia.

  • First aluminium extruder in Malaysia to be awarded the MS ISO9001:2000 certification.

1999
  • Successfully transferred to the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia.

  • Expands its operations to UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

2003
  • Extrusion capacity hits 40,000MT per annum.

  • Became the largest producer of aluminium extrusion products in Malaysia.

2005
  • Ventures into China and establishes its new aluminium extrusion plant in Foshan with a capacity of 120,000MT per annum.

  • Total investment value of RM500 million with a workforce of 2,000 employees.

2006

Acquires an aluminium smelter with a 90,000MT capacity per annum in Hubei, China.

2007
  • Kick-starts the development of Malaysia’s first-ever aluminium smelting plant in Mukah, Sarawak with a capacity of 120,000MT per annum.

  • Total investment value of RM1 billion with a workforce of 850 employees.

2008

Expands its extrusion operations to Hubei, China with a capacity of 30,000MT per annum.

2009

Press Metal’s Mukah, Sarawak aluminium smelter commences commercial production.

2010

Sumitomo Corporation, Japan’s third largest trading house, invested in 20% equity interest in the Mukah Aluminium Smelter.

2011
  • ‘PMS’ brand aluminium ingots produced by Mukah Aluminium Smelter has successfully listed on the London Metal Exchange as a high-grade primary aluminium.

  • The Mukah Aluminium Smelter hits its full production capacity of 120,000MT per annum.

  • Kick-starts the development of Phase 2 aluminium smelting plant in Samalaju Industrial Park, Bintulu, Sarawak with a capacity of 320,000MT per annum.

  • Total investment value of RM2.2 billion with a workforce of 1,300 employees.

2012

Samalaju Aluminium Smelter commences commercial operations.

2014
  • Sumitomo Corporation invested in 20% equity interest in the Samalaju Aluminium Smelter.

  • The Samalaju smelting plant in Malaysia hits its full production capacity of 320,000MT per annum.

  • ‘PMB’ brand aluminium ingots produced by Samalaju Aluminium Smelter successfully listed on the London Metal Exchange as a high-grade primary aluminium.

  • Kick-starts the development of the 3rd aluminium smelter in Sarawak (Samalaju Aluminium Smelter 2) in Samalaju, Sarawak, Malaysia with an additional capacity of 320,000MT per annum.

  • Estimated total investment value of RM2 billion with a workforce of 1,200 employees.

2015

Press Metal’s 3rd aluminium smelter (Samalaju Aluminium Smelter 2) in Sarawak commences commercial operation.

2016

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, Press Metal has grown into the largest integrated aluminium producer in South East Asia with a 760,000MT smelting capacity and 160,000MT extrusion capacity.

2017
  • Carried out an Internal Reorganisation exercise and a Transfer of Listing Status to a new holding company – Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Berhad – to allow for greater ease and flexibility of expansion.

  • Inaugural issuance of 5-year USD400 million bonds which was 9.5 times oversubscribed and awarded the Best New Bond by The Asset Triple A Award 2017.

  • Inclusion as a component stock in the FBM KLCI Index which comprises the 30 largest companies listed on Bursa Malaysia.

  • Inclusion as a component stock in the MSCI Malaysia Index.

2018
  • Forbes- Featured on Forbes Asia's Fab 50 Companies 2018

  • The Edge Billion Ringgit Club 2018- highest returns to shareholders over three years

2019
  • Confirmed investment into Japan Alumina Associates and signed MOU for the Joint
    Venture into PT Bintan Alumina, Indonesia

2020
  • Subscription to a 25% stake in PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia

  • Power Purchase Agreement finalised with Sarawak Energy Berhad on offtake of 500MW energy

2021
  • Full utilization and ramp up of Phase 3 smelter at our Samalaju smelter to take total smelting capacity to 1.08 million tonnes per annum

  • Set up the first industrial vaccination centre (PPV) in the nation at the Samalaju plant

  • The Edge Billion Ringgit Club 2021- Highest Return to Shareholders over Three Years

2022
  • Obtained ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification for PMBtu and PMI

  • Announced an equity participation of 80% in a new alumina refinery, PT KAN in Indonesia

  • Incorporated Scope 3 GHG emissions into our climate targets and participated in the Carbon Disclosure Project (“CDP”) to enhance transparency and accountability in our decarbonisation strategy

  • Launched low-carbon product with lower environmental footprint (i.e., GEM™ aluminium boasts a carbon footprint of less than 4.0 metric tonnes of CO2e emissions per metric tonne of aluminium for Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect) emissions, CYCAL™ billet, integrates GEM™ with high content of recycled aluminium)

  • Launched Scrap Recycling Project at Press Metal Sarawak in Mukah, increasing aluminium recycling

  • Expanded rooftop solar capacity by 1.2 MW, with an additional 6.3 MW currently under installation across downstream entities to reduce reliance on non-renewable energy

  • Advancing and progressing well in the carbon capture and utilisation (“CCU”) project through a collaboration agreement signed in 2024 with Xi’an Jiaotong University (“XJTU”), exploring innovative emission reduction solutions

  • MSCI ESG rating upgraded to “AA” from “A”

  • Maintained a four-star FTSE4Good rating for the third consecutive year and ranked Top 25% amongst PLCs in FBM EMAS
