Sustainability

We strive to minimize our carbon footprint output in the production of aluminium to meet global sustainable standards. We believe that aluminium is the metal of the future and we have the obligation to protect the future of tomorrow by minimizing our environmental impact. Many initiatives have been taken to drastically reduce emissions during production processes, including maintaining sustainable production methods and increasing recycling rates of natural resources.

These methods, alongside continuous technological advancements, have reduced CO2 emissions by 50% and Perfluorochemicals (PFCs) by more than 90% compared to levels in the 1990s. We keep ourself up-to-date with the latest protocols (such as ISO certifications and GHG protocols) in order to maintain our standard of sustainable excellence.

Besides environmental impacts, we also focus on other aspects of sustainability practices that encompasses the entire system. Press Metal is embarking on implementing sustainable practices with regard to environmental, social, and governance. We acknowledge that the extractive industry faces many environmental challenges and we commit ourselves to good environmental stewardship, with a focus on:

Minimising environmental impacts and climate change.
Researching ways to increase energy efficiency, decrease energy usage, and limit greenhouse gas emissions.
Promoting responsible and safe disposal or the reuse of waste products.
Maximising the use of recycled materials.
Restoring land to its natural state or to sustainable agriculture use after mining or after other industrial processes.
A rigorous analysis programme to develop a near-complete understanding of the life cycle of aluminium.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI)

About ASI

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, ASI, is a global, multi-stakeholder, non-profit standards setting and certification organization that aims to recognise and foster responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium following an entire value chain approach. It is supported by more than 100 companies and associations including upstream and downstream producers and consumers such as Alcoa, Norsk Hydro, Rio Tinto Alcan, Aleris, Audi, BMW Group, Constellium, Jaguar Land Rover, Nestlé, Nespresso SA, Novelis, Rexam, and Tetra Pak.

In December 2017, ASI launched its Performance Standard, which was developed in collaboration with the industry, downstream users and NGOs and is recognized as the only sustainability supply-chain standard applicable across the entire aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard requirements cover 11 groups of criteria ranging from business ethics and governance, environmental performance, human rights and social practices, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain.

PRESS METAL joins ASI in March 2020

Arising from the increasing demand to be a responsible aluminium producer, Press Metal is determined and committed in working towards ASI’s objective and its Standards. As the members in the ‘Production and Transformation’ class, Press Metal will be working towards certifying one of our facilities against the ASI Performance Standard Certification within 2 years of joining.

Press Metal Bintulu Sdn Bhd (PMBtu), our largest aluminium smelting plant located in Bintulu, will be taking on the certification journey. Once obtained, PMBtu will become an ASI-certified plant. Attaining the ASI Certification will add credibility to Press Metal as responsible and sustainable producer of aluminium products. Consult ASI newsletter on Press Metal here.

In addition, our adoption of renewable energy sources in production, mainly hydroelectric as the main source of energy generation, promotes low carbon usage, flood control, irrigation, and water supply.
